AK-47 AK-63DS AMD-63 Arsenal magazines Magpul SAM7UF SAM7UF-85 Tapco

I’m Attempting to Expand My Knowledge of the Arsenal SAM 7-UF

So, I’ve been not only looking at SAM7UF reviews online, but doing things such as swapping mags between my AK-63DS and SAM7UF.

I’ve 6 Tapco mags that came with the AK-63DS.  The Arsenal came with one Magpul (Gen 1, I think).  The SAM7UF will not take the Tapcos.  The AK-63DS will take the Magpul without issue.

Most people talk crap about the Tapcos, mainly because of issues like this, but this really isn’t an issue with Tapcos.  It’s an issue with the Arsenal.  Why is the mag well that tight?  My ratty-assed AK-63DS will take both without issue, so it’s NOT the mags, and in the AK-63DS’s case, it isn’t the gun.

If I want to take the Arsenal to the range, I’ll only have that one mag, unless I go to Cabelas and pick up a few Magpul mags.  I solved the problem by ordering 3 metal Polish mags from Atlantic Firearms and 4 metal Croatian mags from Apex Gun Parts (both groups being 30-round mags).

I also added 550 cord to both arms of the spars of the collapsible stock.

Eventually, I’ll also find some bakelites, but they’re really scarce.  In fact, it was moderately difficult to find even European metal mags.

The plan is to continue to take my AK-63DS to the range and practice with it.  I’ll use my experience with that particular gun as an AK-47 baseline of knowledge.

I also have to order more ammo, but I’ve enough for a decent start.

AMD 63 Mods On the Way!

My FFL hasn’t even received my AMD 63 yet and I’m already ordering mods for the rifle.

I usually frown upon that because I always want to know how a gun shoots before modifying it.  In this case, I want to swap out the handguard with Magpul bits.  The stock handguard is all-metal and are unshielded.  From my understanding, the handguard get hot.  The Magpul is shielded and appears very rugged.  Installing this also means that I’ll lose the foregrip, but I’m OK with that, as I’ve no experience with it.

The Magpul handguard comes with a gas tube cover, which is great because the gas tube is exposed on this rifle.

I had to order the AKM variant.  This will require some minor fitting but I’m OK with such things and there are YouTube videos on how to fit it to the AMD variants.

I may also order a rail that will attach to the gas tube (which will replace the Magpul gas tube cover), but that will come later.

I think I also need a magazine loader, so I ordered the Butler Creek ASAP Universal Magazine Loader for the AK47.

I also need a sight alignment tool, so I ordered the Magna-Matic Defense Front Sight Adjustment Tool.

I will also need to get some ammo but I’ll worry about that a bit later, as I’m not far from a few gun stores (and Cabelas, if I’m not seeing anything I like at the small gun stores).

The rifle arrives some time tomorrow, but I’ve work.  They’ll have to call me around 10 AM at the latest if they expect me to pick it up tomorrow, otherwise it will be picked up the next morning (they open at 10 AM).

Either way, I’ll be posting pics here between tomorrow and the next day.

5.56mm ammo AR-556 FDE magazine Magpul RDS red dot Ruger

The Ruger Has Arrived!

Ruger AR-556 in FDE

420 rounds of 5.56 x 45

I picked up the Ruger today on my lunch break.

My immediate impressions:  I’m actually surprised at the fit and finish of the Ruger AR-556.  It looks and feels great.  The pieces fit together without issue, with no large gaps between pieces or segments.  Looks GOOD in FDE, too!  That grip feels great – it has a rubber coating…very tactile.  The trigger is good.  The take-down pins are way too stiff (should loosen up with oil and use, hopefully).  They got rid of the D-ring, too…you twist to get the barrel covers off.  Oh, and there’s like 10 Ruger badges and logos on the rifle…like you’re going to forget that you own a Ruger.

Needed three forms of ID just to pick it up (not two as with handguns in VA).  Still, it only took 5 min to get the background check results back.  I have no background…LOL.

For now, 3 mags are enough (at 30 rounds capacity, each, that’s 90 rounds right there).  I also have a Bushnell First Strike Red Dot Sight, but I plan to use the non-aid sights for a bit, while getting used to the rifle.

I’ll post more as I become more accustomed to the firearm.
